Trucks aren’t considered by many to be eco-friendly vehicles, but the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado might change a few minds. In fact, the impact the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado will have on the environment will top that of the Toyota Prius, according to Mark Phelan, writer at the Detroit Free Press.

As one of the bestselling vehicles in the nation, the Silverado tops the Prius in sales by hundreds of thousands of units. It’s not even a close comparison! A full-size truck improving by just one mile per gallon results in a greater impact than an identical increase in a more efficient car, reports Phelan.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, an increase from 16 mpg to 17 mpg results in as much fuel saved as a jump from 35 mpg to 40 mpg. The Department of Energy also reports that if Silverado owners upgrade from a 2009 model to the all-new 2019 model, they will save more than four million gallons of fuel per 100,000 units sold, and if 100,000 Prius owners upgraded from a 2009 model to a 2019 model, they’d save just three million gallons of fuel.

Although the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado isn’t the ideal vehicle for an eco-friendly driver, the full-size truck continues to go green. As automakers develop and implement fuel-saving systems, like hybrid powertrains, trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado will continue to have a greater impact on fuel consumption.
